With the residency at CCM, CCC also welcomed members of the former CCM Children’s Choir, founded in 1983 by Dr. Karen Wolff. The CCM Children’s Choir also had a rich history of performances and recordings with CSO and CCM and provided CCC founder, Robyn Lana, with her initial training in children’s choral conducting.
Performance invitations earned through audition include the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA), Music Educator’s National Conference (MENC) Regional Convention, and the American Orff Schulwerk Association (AOSA) National Convention. In addition, choir members have auditioned for and represented the choir in American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA) Divisional and National Honor Choirs. Each choir also performs at community events and in special outreach concerts.
CCC shared their artistry as the Honor Choir at the Children in Harmony Choral Festival at Florida's Disney World where they worked with Barbara Tagg and composer/conductor Jim Papoulis.
CCC has toured Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, England, Canada, and the United States performing alone, with outstanding children’s choirs, and in international festivals. CCC also maintains its own concert series performing from September through June often hosting guest artists and choirs. Additionally, the choir regularly collaborates with children’s choirs from around the United States.
WORLDSONG®: children in harmony, CCC’s crowning moment, is the culmination of community, collaboration, cultural exchange, musicianship, education, and outreach. The first event took place in June 2000. CCC founded and fully hosted the international children’s choir festival, proudly representing Cincinnati and the United States. This unique event provided the children and the community with an outstanding experience while promoting the arts in Southwestern Ohio. WORLDSONG® is extremely successful in bringing children from different cultures together with music as a common language. Continuing the diverse educational and cultural experience in the program's mission, CCC hosted WORLDSONG® again in August, 2005. During the international festivals, choirs performed independently throughout the city, in a Gala Concert, and with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Erich Kunzel reaching up to 24,500 people (2000) in performances alone. International guest choirs have included the Ta Fong Children’s Choir, Taiwan, Gifu, Japan; and the Niños Cantores del Táchira, Venezuela. WORLDSONG®, a collaborative effort between the Cincinnati Children’s Choir and the Sister Cities Association of Greater Cincinnati, not only unites choirs, it achieves artistic excellence and receives support from major media sponsors, corporate sponsors, foundations, grants, and donations. WORLDSONG® is conducted by CCC Founder Robyn Lana, and has been co-conducted by Henry Leck (2000) and Barbara Tagg (2005). Commissioned composers include Malcolm Dalglish (2000) and Bob Chilcott (2005).
In June 2008, CCC is excited to offer the first annual Queen City Children's Choir Festival to be held at CCM. The festival will unite American choirs in a non-competitive environment performing for one another and together under the direction of CCC's conductor, Robyn Lana. Guest artist/composer/conductor for the event is Jim Papoulis. (For more information, please contact the CCC office directly - choirs welcome to apply)
CCC recognizes and values opportunities for its members to sing under the direction of world renowned educators and conductors. In addition to CCC WORLDSONG® guest conductors, the children have performed under the batons of Henry Leck, Shirley McRae, Kenneth Phillips, David Flood, Jean Ashworth Bartle, Erich Kunzel, James Conlon, Earl Rivers, Stephen Coker, Eric Whitacre, and Mark Gibson.
CCC offers the opportunity to work directly with composers and on commissions for performance. Commissions include the work of Bob Chilcott, Shirley McRae, Malcolm Dalglish, Jason Webb, Allan Naplan, Cynthia Gray, and David Kisor. In 1999, the choir was honored to receive the dedication of Shirley McRae’s arrangement of “Goin’ to Boston.”
During the 2007-08 season, CCC can be seen performing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for two performances: Shore's Lord of the Rings Symphony (September 2007) and On the Transmigration of Souls conducted by composer John Adams. In celebration of their 15th Anniversary Season, the program will also commission and host composers Nick Page (March 2008) and Jim Papoulis (May 2008).
CCC will also premiere the Cincinnati Children's Choir Composition Competition, a national competition for emerging composers. The choirs look forward to premiering the new work and hosting the winning composer while awarding a $1,000 prize. (for more information, contact the CCC office)
